About the Advanced Dance Series

Twice each year, the Amherst area is home to two dances which provide experienced dancers with a unique venue. The Advanced Dances feature nationally-known callers and top-notch English country dance musicians, and allow experienced dancers to dance together with minimal teaching. Akin to a ball without the elaborate costuming, these dances bring together dancers from throughout New England and beyond. The dances span the gamut from classic ECD favorites to newly composed dances by contemporary choreographers, selected to provide both challenge and dancing delight.

Advanced Dances are held in the fall and in the late winter/early spring (February/March/April) of each year at Munson Library in south Amherst, Mass. They are scheduled for Sunday afternoons (1:30-4:30) to facilitate travel for out-of-towners. A leisurely refreshment break adds to the conviviality of the afternoon and supplies energy for more dancing!

For additional dancing enjoyment, the Advanced Dances are usually held the day after the Pleasures of the Town Third Saturday dance. Many experienced dancers spend the weekend in Amherst, arriving in time for the Pleasures of the Town dance on Saturday, spending the night in one of the area's charming bed-and-breakfasts, and then dancing again on Sunday afternoon before returning home.

Admission is $15. All dancers should have complete familiarity with dance figures.
